Gautam Adani is the richest person in Asia again, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index's updated figures Friday. The founder and chairman of the Adani Group regained pole position in Asia after dethroning Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, who took the top spot after Hindenburg Research accused the Adani Group of "brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud" over decades. The report eroded investor confidence and wiped out billions in market value for Adani Group companies. The Adani Group has 10 publicly listed companies, including Adani Port which was 2.8% higher on Asia's Friday afternoon trading session. As of Friday, Adani's net worth stood at $97.6 billion and he was the world's 12th richest person, while Ambani's wealth stood at $97 billion and he was in 13th place, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Adani has denied wrongdoing, saying that Indian authorities assessed its coal shipments before releasing them from ports. India's Supreme Court is also overseeing the market regulator's probe of Hindenburg's allegations. If India's Supreme Court allows the agency's latest request, it would then need to seek an order from Singapore's Court of Appeal to release the material. The Singapore court declined requests from Reuters last month to inspect related case documents, saying in written responses that the files were sealed. The stance adopted by Adani's companies in Singapore "created impediments" and the investigation "remains stalled", the revenue agency told India's Supreme Court in 2021 filings.

The Dharavi slum, about three-quarters the size of New York's Central Park, featured in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning 2008 movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Only those who already lived in Dharavi before 2000, mostly ground-floor residents, will get free homes within the redevelopment. In interviews with Reuters, some Dharavi residents cited the billionaire's financial troubles as contributing to their concerns. Last month, a Mumbai court allowed SecLink to add Adani to its lawsuit, forcing the conglomerate to defend its position before judges. In early August, about 300 opposition supporters and residents gathered in Dharavi to object to Adani's involvement.

U.S. private equity group Bain Capital said its recent agreement to buy Adani Capital was aimed at tapping the "underbanked" segment of India's economy. In July, the Boston-based firm agreed to acquire 90% of Adani Capital and Adani Housing, buying out all of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani's family's private stake in the company. The deal will provide a crucial lending perform to India's micro, small and medium enterprises — a market that is growing rapidly, said Barnaby Lyons, a partner and global co-head of Bain Capital Special Situations. "Just the structurally underbanked nature of the economy means that there is a ... need for innovative finance platforms like Adani Capital," he told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" on Thursday. "This specific business sits in a segment — small lending to micro SMEs, the agricultural space and affordable housing, which actually benefits from some of the best demand supply dynamics."

India regulator proposes curbs on derivative-linked share moves

MUMBAI, May 21 (Reuters) - India’s market regulator proposed measures to contain extreme price movements in shares on which futures and options trade, including longer trading suspensions and restricting price movements. The group collectively lost more than $100 billion in market value soon after the Hindenburg report was published. If shares are flagged for additional surveillance and monitoring should there be a daily limit for price moves, the regulator said. "From the perspective of market stability, risk management and protecting the interest of investors, it is desirable to have safeguards against such extreme price movements, SEBI said. MUMBAI, May 19 (Reuters) - An committee constituted by India's Supreme Court to oversee investigations into the Adani group said India's markets regulator had “drawn a blank” on alleged violations by the group’s overseas entities, according to a report seen by Reuters on Friday. But the expert committee said that there was evidence of a build-up in short positions on Adani group stocks ahead of a report by the U.S based short seller Hindenburg Group, according to the report, which has not been made public. It was not possible to conclude whether there has been regulatory failure regarding price manipulations, the committee said in the report. The court formed the panel to examine the regulatory framework and allegations levelled against billionaire Gautam Adani's conglomerate. In January, U.S.-based short-seller Hindenburg Research raised several governance concerns around the Adani group, alleging improper use of tax havens and stock manipulation by the ports-to-energy conglomerate.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in a filing, said it has approached 11 overseas regulators for information relating to whether the Adani group has violated any norms regarding its publicly available shares. India's Supreme Court is hearing an appeal from SEBI to give it an additional six months to complete its probe into the Adani group. However, the Supreme Court, in oral arguments, said that it was inclined to give a three-month extension. Oral arguments do not necessarily match the final court order, which will likely be given on Monday. Ahead of that order, SEBI, in its filing, reiterated that the Adani group's transactions highlighted by Hindenburg for violating Indian laws are highly complex and included many sub-transactions across numerous jurisdictions.

Adani Enterprise said in a filing to exchanges that its board had approved plans to raise up to 125 billion Indian rupees ($1.53 billion) through similar modes.
